Tips to Stay healthy in the New Year

  • 1.- Get Outside More: Try to get outside for at least 10 minutes a day to get some fresh air. Use that time to relax and clear your head and enjoy all it has to offer.
  • Get Outside More
  • 2.- Exercise More: Find an exercise that you enjoy whether it is going to the gym, walking, running, biking, swimming, or even dancing inside your house to get you moving. Just 30 minutes of exercise is recommended every day so try to find something that you enjoy and can stick to.

  • 3.- Clean: Try to keep a cleaning schedule each week so your house/apartment doesn’t become a mess. It’s easier to clean something small than having to do deep a clean of your entire place. Take things one step at a time and you will see that you do have time to clean everything, just not at once. Living in a clean environment will brighten your mood and just make you feel better about yourself. You’re also at a reduced risk of getting sick because of less germs.

  • 4.- Manage Your Time: Things can get hectic and if you don’t plan ahead you can become overly stressed. Try to plan out your week based on what is urgent and important, so you can fit things in as much as you can. Keeping a calendar or notes on your phone will help you with time management.
  • Manage Your Time
  • 5.- Drink Water: Water may not be as tasty as soda or fruit juice, but it is so much better for you. Water keeps you hydrated, is good for your skin, helps your kidneys, and keeps you from over-eating. Most of the time you aren’t really hungry you’re just thirsty, so before eating a meal drink a glass of water.

  • 6.- Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables: many of us don’t eat the recommended serving of fruits and vegetables every day. You should be having 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits in your diet. Try to eat a piece of fruit as your snack instead of a granola bar and add some veggies like a salad or broccoli to your lunch/dinner. Fruits and vegetables have many vitamins and antioxidants that are good for your body and can prevent you from getting sick. Eating more of them will keep you feeling energized and on top of your game.

  • 7.- Cook More: Eating out may be easier and fun but it doesn’t help your wallet or your health. Learn to cook simple things so that when you are in a time crunch you don’t always have to resort to take-out. Try to make enough so you will have leftovers for nights when you just can’t cook anything. You don’t have to give up eating out completely to be healthy but try to limit it to 1-2 times a week. Your wallet will thank you!

  • 8.- Take Time For Yourself: As we get older, we have many more responsibilities to take care of. The most important one that we sometimes seem to forget is taking care of yourself. Pick up a hobby that you can do every week or even every day if you would like. Making time for yourself is good for your mental health, and is needed to unwind after having to take care of everything else.
  • Take Time For Yourself
  • 9.- Get Enough Sleep: Sleep is very important; you need it to function every day. It’s recommended that you get between 7-8 hours of sleep a night. When you don’t get a good night of sleep you are thrown off the next day and it is harder to focus. Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule throughout the week, as changes in your sleep schedule aren’t good for your body. If you have trouble falling asleep you can things such as ear plugs, sleep mask, sleeping tea, essential oils, weighted blankets or silk pillow sheets.
  • Get Enough Sleep
  • 10.- Don’t Forget about Friends and Family: People tend to drift apart when they have so many things that need to get done at the moment. Don’t let that ruin your relationships with other people. Try to keep in touch with family and friends because it is important to have healthy relationships in your life and people to go to. Don’t let a good person slip through the cracks because of busy schedules, even if it’s a simple text asking how their day was. Staying in touch with people who make us happy and are there for us is important.
